Sometimes kids can become overly focused on the presents or parents can get preoccupied planning the perfect party, but we mustnât lose sight of the reason we throw parties in the first place: to have a good time and celebrate with the people we care about. On a positive note, Iâve noticed a growing tendency for parents to scale back on these over-the-top parties. In fact, many of my young sonâs friendsâ parents ask that children not bring presents.
This trend reminds me of spending the last few days of summer at my grandmotherâs house outside of Boston when I was a child. My birthday is in September, so my grandmother would always throw a birthday party for me and invite some of the children in her neighborhood. At the end of the party, she would tell me that I could choose one present to keep. The presents were still wrapped and I wasnât allowed to know who had given them. Once Iâd picked one, she would distribute the remainder of the presents to the birthday guests. When I was younger, it was hard for me to understand why she did this. Just as any child would, I questioned her. She explained that I was fortunate enough to have all the toys I needed, and that I should think of others and always be generous. This idea of giving back, and of thinking how I can make other people happy, was one of the biggest gifts my grandmother ever gave me.
There is much etiquette surrounding parties and the different rules for maintaining proper manners, such as when to send a thank-you card or note and how to respond to an invitation. We will discuss these, of course, but to me, one of the most important aspects is to make the party a memorable affair for everyone. This means making sure that your child is well mannered and good-natured, and thatâif they are the hostâthey ensure everyone feels welcome at the celebration.
